Frequently Asked Questions.
Here are some common questions about Personal Parenting.
How is Personal Parenting different from other parenting books and websites?
Most parenting experts focus on fixing or improving what isn’t working. Personal Parenting was designed to help you identify and use your unique strengths so you have fewer problems to fix. It will also help you understand what kinds of strategies and expert advice with mesh with you and your family so that you don’t waste any time when you do run into a parenting problem.
What is Parental Awareness?
Parental awareness is a conscious recognition of who you are as a parent. In order to understand who you are as a parent, you need to tap into your subconscious where your feelings originate.
Why do you start with a Parental Awareness Workout?
Whether we are aware of it or not, we all arrive at adulthood with some emotional scars that impact how we respond to people and circumstances around us. In order to be free to parent the way we want to parent, we need to know where our sore spots are and how they impact our behavior. The 14 Day Parental Awareness Workout was designed to kick start that process.
Where did the principles of Personal Parenting come from?
Scientists have only been studying what makes people feel good for approximately 20 years, but philosophers, artists and religious thinkers have been studying it since the beginning of recorded history.
When I went back and studied classical wisdom for living a good life, I found a common theme. Robert McKee said it best when he said, “In essence we have told one another the same tale, one way or another, since the dawn of humanity, and that story could usefully be called the Quest.”
We’ve been telling each other new versions of the same story over and over and over for a good reason—because this story shows us exactly what we need to become the kind of person (or parent) we want to become. Like every protagonist, parents need a few things. They need to figure out: who they are, where they want to go, how they’re going to get there, how to confront challenges, who is going to help them and how to enjoy the journey.
When you master those principles, then your natural strengths shine through—even when your circumstances aren’t ideal.
Where do the exercises come from?
The exercises on this site are a collection of exercises that have been researched and tested by positive psychologists, as well as some gleaned from my study of classical literature. I am organizing them into workouts designed to help you progressively master each of the ten principles.
What is your background?
I’m a freelance writer, certified teacher and mother of four. My work has been published on sites like: PsychCentral, Scary Mommy, The Good Men Project, FamilyShare, LDSLIving, NewsOK, Segullah and more.
When will the Personal Parenting Course be ready?
A full course featuring lessons and workouts to guide you step by step through the development of all the Principles of Personal Parenting is in the works. I’m *hoping* to have the full course finished Winter 2016. Individual modules of the course will probably roll out before then.
